By then, researchers had identified three genetic mutations that can be inherited and, if they are, cause a form of Alzheimer\u2019s called early onset because it strikes before age 65 and sometimes far earlier. Since 2004, Hornstein and all five of her siblings have been tested. Hornstein is the only one who doesn\u2019t carry PSEN1, one of the mutations.<\/p>\n
But despite the stress and sadness of watching her siblings fade away from their essential selves, Hornstein takes pride in her extended family\u2019s role in ongoing research that\u2019s reaping insights that might pave the way for treatments \u2014 both for early onset and the far more common late-onset form. The research that has involved nearly 20 members of her family already has documented brain changes that can be traced back 15-plus years prior to symptoms. Now the next phase of that study, called the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network Trial, will assess whether two drugs can slow the progression of the disease. One of Hornstein\u2019s brothers will travel this year to Washington University in St. Louis to participate, and at least one of her nieces and nephews will enroll at another research site. \u201cThat\u2019s where I put all my hope now,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
