{"id":15768,"date":"2016-04-25T09:12:14","date_gmt":"2016-04-25T16:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medicalfitnessnetwork.org\/public\/?p=15768"},"modified":"2020-05-18T09:41:52","modified_gmt":"2020-05-18T16:41:52","slug":"need-a-no-excuse-approach-to-exercise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/all-mfn\/need-a-no-excuse-approach-to-exercise\/","title":{"rendered":"Need a \u2018No Excuse\u2019 Approach To Exercise?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What do the following items have in common?<br \/>\nAlarm, Sunscreen, Exercise, Notes, Medication, Advice&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The answer is that they only work if you use them.\u00a0 Now if you are using an alarm you would insist that it has a mechanism that operates, whether it needs batteries or a wind-up.\u00a0 For sunscreen it must have SPF.\u00a0 For notes, they only work if you later read them and medication or advice you either take them or you don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Exercise is an interesting one.\u00a0 We know that nearly all experts agree on at least the proposition that exercise works only if you do it.\u00a0 Some few are blessed. They love their exercise\u2026 some maybe too much.\u00a0 We all know someone who runs 25 miles per week\u2026 REALLY?\u00a0 Just give me an exercise that I don\u2019t hate that will actually be good for me.\u00a0 Make it something that doesn\u2019t require an hour of make-up and a parade at a gym. Don\u2019t make me have to drive there or share the equipment and wipe it down. Give me something that won\u2019t grind my joints to dust.\u00a0 Make it short.\u00a0 Give me some music that does half of the work for me.\u00a0 Is there anything like that available?\u00a0 No membership, no seminar and NO: &#8221; how do I work the darn machine?!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I know I have to do exercise.\u00a0 Pick your illness.\u00a0 The miracle cure for:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/consumer-portal\/resources\/heart-disease\/\">Heart disease<\/a> &#8211; exercise<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/consumer-portal\/resources\/diabetes\/\">Diabetes<\/a> &#8211; exercise<br \/>\nDepression &amp; anxiety &#8211; exercise<br \/>\nTennis elbow &#8211; exercise<br \/>\nHiccups &#8211; exercise<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Doctors have long focused on the treatment of disease. Now we have a manual that highlights a means of prevention. &#8221; \u2014Sanjay Gupta, MD, chief medical correspondent, CNN<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In his book, <em>The Exercise Cure<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=dp_byline_sr_book_1?ie=UTF8&amp;text=Jordan+Metzl&amp;search-alias=books&amp;field-author=Jordan+Metzl&amp;sort=relevancerank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Metzl<\/a> ponders:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if there were a drug to treat every illness, across all body systems, proven potent against heart disease, depression, arthritis, PMS and erectile dysfunction \u2015 even in chronic diseases such as asthma, dementia, and certain types of <a href=\"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/consumer-portal\/resources\/cancer\/\">cancer<\/a>? What if it had no side effects, was completely free, readily available, and worked for\u00a0<em>everyone<\/em>? Every single person who took it decreased her risk of premature death and raised his quality of life. Would you want it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Center for Disease control writes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2011, more than half (52%) of adults aged 18 years or older did not meet recommendations for aerobic exercise or <a href=\"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/consumer-portal\/resources\/cancer\/fitness-professionals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">physical activity<\/a>. In addition, 76% did not meet recommendations for muscle-strengthening physical activity.<sup>7<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>About half of US adults (47%) have at least one of the following major risk factors for heart disease or stroke: uncontrolled high blood pressure, uncontrolled high LDL cholesterol, or are current smokers.<sup>8<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Ninety percent of Americans consume too much sodium, increasing their risk of high blood pressure.<sup>9<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_15770\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15770\" class=\"wp-image-15770 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/chairdancing2-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"chairdancing2\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/chairdancing2-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/chairdancing2.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15770\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo from Life\u2019s A Celebration Chair Dancing\u00ae Fitness Aerobic Series<\/p><\/div>\n<p>So if we\u2019re sure about the cure, how can we most effectively deliver it?\u00a0 Let\u2019s throw out a few ideas:<\/p>\n<p>Make it convenient\u2026<br \/>\nMake it safe\u2026<br \/>\nMake it user friendly\u2026 please don\u2019t expect that everyone is a hip-hop devotee;<br \/>\nMake it as inviting as exercise can get with catchy &amp; motivating music\u2026<br \/>\nMake it doable in street clothes, work clothes, stay at home clothes or add a dimension: no clothes!<br \/>\nMake it so there is progress so that I can ramp my dedication up from \u201ctrying 2 minutes\u201d to \u201cI\u2019m fitter for those stairs that were a challenge before\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Try a minute of cure on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chairdancing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ChairDancingFitness.com<\/a>\u2026 It\u2019s worth more than a pound of cure!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>With a childhood passion for dance, Jodi Stolove has been devoted to teaching dance and fitness for more than thirty years.
