{"id":20845,"date":"2023-08-23T09:37:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-23T16:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medicalfitnessnetwork.org\/public\/?p=20845"},"modified":"2024-01-08T08:50:42","modified_gmt":"2024-01-08T16:50:42","slug":"not-fault-youre-losing-clients-need-think","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/all-mfn\/not-fault-youre-losing-clients-need-think\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s Not Your Fault You\u2019re Losing Clients to \u201cI need to think about it\u201d (And What to Do About it)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cI need to think about it\u201d<br>\u201cI wanna think it over\u201d<br>\u201cLet me sleep on it\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Probably the most annoying phrases to land on your eardrums since the evolution of \u2018cray cray\u2019 and \u2018let me take a selfie\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve just spent the best part of an hour on an amazing presentation of your skills and services, you cracked a few jokes, you found some common ground, and you\u2019re pretty certain you\u2019re on your way to gaining a new happy client and they hit you with it: <strong>\u201cSounds good, I need to think about it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cue jaw drop, awkward silence and a fumble of, \u201cEm\u2026 sure, here\u2019s my card,\u201d and you\u2019re left wondering where it all went wrong and what to do next. However, it\u2019s not their lack of decision making skills I blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1) They\u2019re not your ideal client.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m an avid believer that \u2018every opportunity is an opportunity\u2019, but I\u2019m a bigger believer in \u2018your time is a precious commodity\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s only natural that when an opportunity arises to meet with someone interested in paying you for your services, you jump at the chance. But have you pre-qualified this person?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last thing you want is to spend your time and energy with someone only to find out at the end they\u2019re only in town for a few days, or they were looking for a particular service you don\u2019t actually provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use these pre-qualifying questions before you set an appointment to make sure you and the prospect are a potential match:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What\u2019s your experience been working with _____ in the past?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What happened that you stopped going?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s made you decide to start now?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s important for you when choosing ______?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2) They\u2019re scared!<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be the most pleasant person in the world, but for most prospects, you are full of knowledge they don\u2019t have and are ready to judge them. Although I\u2019m sure this is far from the truth, the unknown is <a href=\"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/all-mfn\/fear-can-sabotage-fitness-goals-programming-success\/\">scary<\/a> and judgmental for most people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about the last time you had to venture into the unknown and ask someone with all the knowledge you don\u2019t have for help. It\u2019s scary and there\u2019s a big fear of being not only judged, but being ripped off too. Been to the mechanic lately? I was less terrified watching<em> The Exorcist.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a lot of would be clients, this is a new environment, and potentially the first time they are addressing their health concerns with actionable steps. So everything is a bit, well, scary!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to quash this for your client is to let them know beforehand what\u2019s going to happen. Keep things simple, and step by step. Tell them exactly what\u2019s going to happen from the moment they arrive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cJohn, when you get to the front desk, tell reception you have an appointment to see me.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Then what I\u2019m going to do is have a chat with you about your health and your goals and that way we can see if I\u2019m the right person to help you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Then I\u2019ll show you around, go over the options available and you can ask me any questions you have and then you can let me know if you\u2019d like to work with me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even when you\u2019re with them, keep reminding them what\u2019s going to happen next (&#8220;&#8230;after I show you around, we\u2019re going to take a seat at the table and I\u2019m going to go over all the options with you.&#8221;), so they can stop the guess work and really listen to what you\u2019re saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3) They don\u2019t see the value in what you\u2019re charging.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, you might have the best education in the world or the most beautiful facility which, logically, makes sense for your client to pay over the odds for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But people don\u2019t buy on logic. They buy on emotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you continue to focus on the value of the \u2018product\u2019 you\u2019re selling and not on the <a href=\"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/all-mfn\/results-results-results\/\">results<\/a> they\u2019ll get from using your services, the perceived value will always be too expensive, i.e.,\u201cI need to think about it\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether your services cost $10 an hour or $1000 an hour, if the perceived value isn\u2019t there for your customer, they\u2019ll always need to \u201cthink about it\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start asking emotional based questions targeted toward the results they will get to eliminate any doubt about whether you\u2019re worth the <a href=\"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/all-mfn\/why-for-boomers-and-seniors-price-is-not-an-issue\/\">price<\/a> tag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What\u2019s the number one reason you\u2019re here today?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why is that so important to you?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s the risk if you don\u2019t do this now?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What have you tried in the past to help you with this?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s going to be different this time?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/senior-trainer-machine.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23935\" width=\"675\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/senior-trainer-machine.jpg 900w, https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/senior-trainer-machine-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/senior-trainer-machine-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/senior-trainer-machine-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/senior-trainer-machine-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4) They\u2019re overwhelmed by all the options.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>What happened last time you went to get ice-cream and there was 72 different flavours? Cone or cup? Chocolate sprinkles or nuts?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You had to think about it. In fact, you probably had choice paralysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to psychologist Professor Iyengar, who ran a famous jam study in 2000, \u201cIn reality, people find more and more choice to actually be debilitating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same thing happens when you give your customer too many options. Make it simple for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;John, there\u2019s three different options for you to choose from (small, medium, large) however, based on what you told me, I would recommend this one. Which one of those do you think works best for you?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s actually three different things happening here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing is you\u2019re making it a simple decision with three options, instead of 72.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second is you have the law of contrast with the small, medium and large choice. If the small package is $100, the medium is $200 and the large is $300, paying $200 seems achievable. Compare that the only offer on the table being either $100 or $300 &#8212; there\u2019s a huge contrast between the two, which often leads to \u201cI need to think about it\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third thing happening here is you\u2019re asking for the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhich one of those works best for you?\u201d warrants an answer from the choices you\u2019ve given. Compared to \u201cdo you want to work with me?\u201d which gives the option of responding with, \u201cI\u2019m not sure, I need to think about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An important note to make is that, as with most objections, when it comes to \u201cI need to think about it\u201d, prevention is better than cure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, I still stand by the fact that the prospect is at fault, but have you noticed how all these reasons they need to think about it starts with them, but ends with you turning it around?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Claire Garrigan is a fitness sales coach dedicated to helping fitness professionals close more sales, make more money and have happier clients all while keeping integrity front of mind.
