Keep in mind that these are general guidelines; the pregnant client and healthcare provider should determine what&#8217;s best for her pregnancy. The health and growth of the fetus may affect what the healthcare provider determines to be a woman\u2019s healthiest weight gain range and that amount can vary as pregnancy progresses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>ACOG Guidelines for Weight Gain During Pregnancy<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><em>Pre-Pregnancy BMI\u00a0 \/ Recommended Gain\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Underweight (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less than 18.5): <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28-40 lbs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Normal Weight (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18.5-24.9):<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25-35 lbs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overweight<\/span> (<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25-29.9):<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15-25 lbs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obese<\/span> (<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30 and higher):<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11-20 lbs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A pregnant woman\u2019s diet and exercise level play an important role in keeping weight gain within healthy limits.\u00a0 It&#8217;s important to stress that, on average, only 300 extra calories a day are needed to fulfill the energy needs of pregnancy.\u00a0 If a woman gains in excess of what her healthcare provider recommends, she should keep a food record for several days to see if she\u2019s taking in too many calories.
