Though that is a big number, it\u2019s not big enough to guarantee that everyone reading this knows someone who is impacted.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the thing, that number DOES NOT include those with more subtle disordered eating symptoms. This broadens the scope quite a bit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if we looked at diagnosable eating disorders as the far end of a spectrum?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s call the other end, healthy intuitive eating.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does that mean?\u00a0 Healthy intuitive eating means that you eat when you are hungry.\u00a0 It also means that you eat what you are hungry for, and you stop when you feel satisfied.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are people that fall on that far end. Truly. I have even met one or two!\u00a0 They are not unicorns- possibly the closest living things though.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s label everything in the middle as \u201cdisordered eating\u201d.\u00a0 This would include behaviors like overeating, food restricting, skipping meals, over-exercising, overly rigid eating schedules and so many more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of people, that I know anyway, lie somewhere in that space. Would you agree? It encompasses:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What you believe about your own appearance\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How you feel about your body<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How you sense and control your body as you move.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How you physically experience or feel in your body.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of us internalize messages starting at a young age that can lead to either positive or negative body image. Let\u2019s clarify what that means.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Positive body image is a clear, true perception of your shape; seeing the various parts of your body as they really are. Body positivity involves feeling comfortable and confident in your body, accepting your natural body shape and size, and recognizing that physical appearance says very little about one\u2019s character and value as a person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A negative body image, on the other hand, involves a distorted perception of one\u2019s shape. Negative body image involves feelings of shame, anxiety, and self-consciousness. Those with negative body image are constantly comparing themselves to others without recognizing that they are essentially comparing apples to bananas\u2026 oranges aren\u2019t far enough away\u2026\u00a0 In such comparisons, they determine their perceived self-worth or value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with disordered eating, body image concerns can affect most of us.
