Consult a neuro-opthamologist or neuro-optometrist regularly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Bifocal wearers need to be cautious when walking up and down stairs. Depth and distance may be compromised and pose a fall risk. *Progressive lenses are even worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Double-vision (diplopia): ask a neuro-opthamologist about prism glasses (meant to improve eye alignment).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Dry eyes\/Irritation: apply a warm compress twice a day\u00a0 to relieve dry eyes. (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask the doctor about eye drops available to treat symptoms.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Improve lighting in high fall risk areas, such as stairs, steps, bathroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Remove tripping hazards in home, such as throw rugs (or tape them down), clutter, unnecessary furniture, power cords.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Color contrast options:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating: Use different colored plate and placemat. For example, a white plate on a black placemat; pour dark liquids (like coffee) into a light cup. Set timer for food rather than visually checking.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bathroom: Use dark floor mats if the floor is a lighter color&#8217; magnifying mirror for makeup or shaving; contrasting towel behind head to help see head\/hair<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stairs: Apply colored duct tape to edge of steps.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout home: Place brightly colored tape on small items that are hard to find (light switches, drawstrings on blinds).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology: Change the contrast of the screen and increase font size for reading messages.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><b>Vision Specific Exercises<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFighters\u201d should always consult his or her physician before beginning vision exercises with their fitness professional. Vision exercises are specific to the problems. The following exercises are a few examples for vergence movement problems, diplopia (double vision) and motor control and endurance. Do each exercise 5-10x with a short break between exercises.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Convergence Drill &#8211; \u201cpencil pushups\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hold a pencil at arms length.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowly bring pencil closer to nose and keep eyes focused on pencil<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; padding-bottom: 15px;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop when double-vision occurs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"width: 1161px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-31618-1\" width=\"1161\" height=\"653\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Colleen-Vision-Video.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Colleen-Vision-Video.mp4\">https:\/\/medfitnetwork.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Colleen-Vision-Video.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motor-control and Endurance Drill<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practice looking up and down slowly. (The head does not move)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practice looking left and right slowly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practice looking diagonally. (Down to left hand then over right corner)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; padding-bottom: 15px;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Picture a figure 8 (vertical and horizontal) and follow the sign.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accommodation (also known as visual searching)<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hold a pencil close to your eyes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look at the pencil then look at an object in the distance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now look back at the pencil.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercises to improve ocular function are easy to add to any program. To maximize your \u201cfighters\u201d time, combining visual exercises with gait\/balance and strength training exercises may increase reaction time and agility skills.\u00a0 Below are three exercises you can do with your \u201cfighters\u201d in a class or private session to address multiple issues at one time. Always remember to adapt exercises to appropriately fit the \u201cfighters&#8221; skill level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Stand with one foot flat and on tip-toes of the other foot.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Perform an arm exercise (bicep curl for example) while looking right and left.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Haytoss (equipment options: tube, single weight, medicine ball or clasped hands)<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Squat stance (reserve lunge stance for \u201cfighters&#8221; with higher skill levels). Squat and tap the front of the left knee.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand and rotate hips to head to the upper opposite corner.<br \/>\n<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Eyes follow the diagonal pattern.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bd Jack (or lateral lunge) with a small ball toss up.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand or sit with feet together.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hold a fist size ball in the right hand. (juggling ball for example)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step the right foot (or laterally lunge) to the right AND toss the ball up at the same time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step back to start position and repeat on the same side for a total of 10 reps.<br \/>\n<\/span><em>*To progress the drill use the opposite hand to toss the ball up.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>*Eyes MUST follow the ball up and down.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision issues affect everyday life for people living with Parkinson\u2019s Disease.
