ABOUT RG
The RehabGYM was conceived in 2003 as an innovative blend of physical therapy and athletic training within a medical gym. From the start, the RehabGYM has provided proactive care to the community, in order to aid in the prevention
of injury and disease, as well as expert rehabilitative care. Sharon Gutwin, physical
therapist and founder of the RehabGYM, envisions health care reform that focuses
on preventative care by physical therapists just as in other areas of medicine: insurance companies have been recognizing the need for preventative care by dentists and primary care doctors for decades, routinely covering preventative care at or near 100 percent. Physical therapy has traditionally only been applied in a restorative manner, which is by far more expensive and less desirable than the potential prevention of the condition needing rehabilitation. While it may be impossible to prevent all injuries and all disease, it is most definitely possible
to prevent many such conditions.
Physical fitness is fundamental to all health. A person with good strength, joint
motion, posture, body mechanics, and balance is much less likely to become
injured. A person with good physical fitness is less likely to become obese and
prone to chronic disease. Monitoring this physical health and any necessary intervention is best accomplished by physical therapists (for the general population) and athletic trainers (for the active population).
The RehabGYM empowers clients to good health, preventing injury, heading off surgeries and avoiding chronic disease. In addition to these physical health
benefits, there are mental health benefits as well: people generally become more
self-confident; less depressed, and experience more restful sleep with physical
activity.
While physical activity and exercise are instrumental in injury prevention and the
treatment of chronic disease, the improper application of physical activity can actually be more harmful than good. When a doctor simply instructs a patient to be more active, say by encouraging more walking, overuse injuries are likely to occur. Telling an overweight, deconditioned person in their 50s to be more active is an invitation for joint, tendon, muscle, and/or ligament trouble. There are also many people who hear the advice of their doctor and want to be more active but lack motivation.
The RehabGYM offers medically directed and supervised exercise, nutrition and mental health services to allow clients to safely navigate through the establishment of a healthy life style. The formation of relationships between clients and providers offers motivation and accountability, both of which are necessary for success.
Physical therapists, athletic trainers, nutritionists, mental health specialist and personal trainers all work together as a team in one medically oriented, beautiful, space to provide the full spectrum of health care from wellness to rehabilitation to individuals and groups of all ages and abilities. ... show less.
