Meet the Mentors

Lisa Dougherty

Lisa is a 25-year fitness industry veteran, working primarily with medical conditions. She is the founder of the MedFit Network and MedFit Education Foundation. She has been recognized as a fitness leader several times, including by the White House as a Champion of Change finalist in 2016.

Dr. Dan Mikeska

Dan is a Human Movement specialist and successful business owner, professor, speaker, and author with the goal to promote interprofessional education and collaboration to connect education, medicine, and fitness for everyone.

Jonathan Ross

Jonathan is a multiple Personal Trainer of the Year Award-Winner, brain fitness expert, ACE Master Trainer and international presenter & educator. He serves are the Director of Education for the MedFit Education Foundation.

CEUs for MedFit Specialists

For those who’ve completed a MedFit Specialist Course and earned a Specialist designation, you’ll earn 2 CEUs for each hour of mentorship until December 31. (MedFit specializations require 10 CEUs every 2 years to renew.)

Starting 1/1/25, mentees will earn 1 CEU for every 1 hour of mentorship.

Lisa Dougherty founded the MedFit Network in 2013. The MFN is both a professional membership organization for fitness, allied healthcare professionals, gyms, studios, integrative wellness studios, and students and a free online resource directory for the community to locate fitness and allied healthcare professionals with a background in prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation in working with those with chronic disease, medical conditions, disabilities, etc.

She established the MedFit Education Foundation, a nonprofit 501©(3) to in 2017 to elevate the quality and amount of available education for fitness and allied healthcare via weekly educational webinars and a national traveling conference the MedFit Tours with an annual conference in Irvine, CA.

In 2018 she launched both MedFit TV, a collection of educational videos, webinars, and interviews with inspirational people, leading experts in their related fields, and outstanding professionals for both community and professionals, and MedFit Classroom an online learning platform for fitness professionals. She also launched the free quarterly publication, MedFit Professional Magazine and MedFit podcast.

In 2023, she established the MedFit Training and Education Center through the Foundation. The Center in Costa Mesa, CA offers personal fitness services and education in Orange County, for all ages, skill levels, chronic diseases, medical conditions and disabilities.

Lisa has been recognized as a fitness leader several times including Personal Fitness Professional Magazine and the Huffington Post.  She was acknowledged by the White House as a “Champion of Change” finalist in 2016.

Lisa’s personal training specialty is medical fitness. Since 1999, she has been providing top-caliber personal training services to clients of all ages, fitness levels and with a variety of medical conditions. Lisa develops progressive workouts that change every 4-6 weeks to keep things interesting. She tracks client’s performance and gains at each workout. Her goal is to educate, motivate and support her clients to become more physically active and to adopt a healthier lifestyle through exercise and nutrition. Lisa is always excited to work with new individuals and enjoys many relationships with long-time clients.

Education & Certifications

Lisa is a graduate of the Fitness Instructor Program at University California, Irvine 1999. This program included full university-level anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, nutrition, psychology, and many others.

Lisa is a Certified Personal Trainer through the American Council on Exercise since 1999. She has completed dozens of specialty certifications and continuing education courses. (You can view Lisa’s comprehensive list of education and media by clicking here.)

Dan Mikeska’s mission is to improve population health and to increase the quality of life by connecting education, medicine, and fitness. This goal can be achieved by providing an educational pathway for fitness professionals who want to become respected members of the healthcare community, prompting clinicians to prescribe exercise, and encouraging patients to enlist the services of a qualified fitness professional.

Dan’s philosophy centers on the fact that human movement is a complicated and coordinated effort between your muscles, skeleton, and metabolism, and everyone is different. Knowing how each of the systems of the bodywork, independently and in concert, is essential in the development of an effective fitness program.

In addition to a doctorate degree in Health Science and a master’s degree in Human Movement, Dan has some of the most sought after certifications from The National Academy of Sports Medicine, the American Council on Exercise, the Cancer Exercise Training Institute, and the Exercise is Medicine credential from the American College of Sports Medicine.

His education and vast experience have given him the opportunity to work with notable organizations such as Life with Cancer and 2Unstoppable. He is currently adjunct faculty for A.T. Still University’s master’s of Kinesiology program and American Public University System’s Sports and Health Science program. He is also a member of the Industry Advisory Council for American Public University and a member of the Medical Advisory Council for Cancer Exercise Training Institute.

 

His “800 Pounds of Parents” directly inspired Jonathan’s prolific fitness career.  He is a multiple Personal Trainer of the Year Award-Winner (ACE, IDEA, and PFP Magazine), creator of Funtensity, brain fitness visionary, blogger and master trainer for the American Council on Exercise (ACE). Additionally, Jonathan is the MedFit Educatoun Foundation’s Director of Education where he provides course development leadership to our authors to help us craft courses that provide both excellent content and an enjoyable learning experience.

As a speaker he captivates while inspiring change with an approachable, accessible personality and common sense insights to commonly confusing fitness topics. His book, Abs Revealed, delivers a modern, intelligent approach to abdominal training. He creates serious fitness without taking it too seriously to ensure it is an effective, enjoyable, engaging experience. His methods create unfakeable smiles, unshakeable brains, and unforgettable fitness.  A former astronomer, Jonathan used to study stellar bodies – now he builds them!
