What to Expect from Your First Session
During an initial acupuncture session, you will be asked many different questions about your current health, and past medical history. The acupuncturist will ask to feel your pulse, as well as look at your tongue as part of the evaluation. The acupuncturist will use this information to come up with a diagnosis according to the principles of Oriental Medicine. The acupuncturist will also look out for any clinical signs and symptoms that may be red flags for an underlying condition that would require attention from a medical doctor. Once the treatment plan has been devised, you will get into a comfortable laying or seated position. The acupuncturist will use tiny, sterile, single-use needles to stimulate points on the body that can improve circulation, decrease inflammation, balance hormones, and eliminate pain. Once all the needles are inserted, the acupuncturist will let you rest for 20-40 minutes depending on what is being treated. Often you will be provided with a heat lamp or blankets to increase comfort and relaxation.
Patients typically leave an acupuncture treatment feeling relaxed, rested, and more balanced. The number of treatments needed varies from person to person, but you can expect to see results within 6-8 sessions. One of the great advantages of Acupuncture is the absence of serious side effects. Dizziness and bruising are the most common but don’t occur frequently. When choosing an Acupuncturist look for credentialing and experience in the condition you need help with and ask questions to feel comfortable about whom you choose.
