No Turning Back: Reduce Back Pain with These Spine-Stabilizing Exercises

We’ve all tweaked our backs every now and then. Maybe you’ve picked up a child and all of a sudden something felt strange. Or perhaps you had a bad night of sleep and your back shows the after-effects.

Unfortunately you’re not alone: Nearly eight in ten people suffer from back pain. We’re sitting more often, and our core muscles are suffering. And when your core suffers, your back suffers.

So what then can you do if your back hurts? You might think that you shouldn’t do anything—but that won’t help, actually. What will help are stretching exercises and core-strengthening moves. Many of the stretches are variations of yoga moves—say, cow-cat stretch that improves the flexibility of your front and back. You can also strengthen the muscles in your legs—making them more flexible and improving their strength, too.
