There are 30 million Americans today with diabetes and 86 million Americans with pre-diabetes. An estimated thirty percent of them will go on to get Type 2 diabetes. Yet few physicians send their patients who can benefit from diabetes education to diabetes educators – those specifically trained to help people manage diabetes. Why? I talked with the current and Past-Presidents of the American Association for Diabetes Educators to find out why, and to learn about the imperative of diabetes self-management education for all who need it.
