How did you hear about MFN?

Online, I joined when they very first started over a year ago!

How do you or your business help those with chronic disease/medical conditions or who need pre & postnatal care?

I am a chiropractor, so I help a wide range of patients from those in chronic pain, to those with minor flareups, to those that come in for continued wellness and optimal bodily function! Since chiropractic school, I have also discovered a passion for caring for mamas in the perinatal time of their life–optimal pelvic posture, balance and neurological function is very important in those times for comfort and has been shown to decrease labor times and dystocia. It can also be used to help “get things moving” and help induce labor for mamas that are overdue. The list of benefits goes on and on for Chiropractic Care for mamas!

What makes you different from all the other fitness professionals out there?

I have special training in working with women in the perinatal period, a Certification in the Webster Technique. I am also completing further training in a 300 hour certificate from the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association in Pediatric and Family practice. The hours include a mix of didatic and hands on classes as well as a commitment to research in a specific practice-based clinical research project. After I have completed the courses, I will take a board certification exam.

What is your favorite activity or class to participate in?

I currently work in a wonderful place that has several different types of yoga classes available, and I love trying them all-whether it is restorative, vinyasa, hatha, or hot yoga! It feels great to push your body to do different things, and not to mention its good for your body too! I live in Minneapolis which is one of the most bike friendly cities in the country so we love going out and exploring the city on our bikes as well!

What is one piece of advice that you would give other fitness professionals about working with special populations or those who need pre & postnatal care?

Every pregnancy can be SO different from woman to woman, even from one birth to the next! You should never treat them the same because of this-take time to get to know their bodies and their symptoms and treat them for their specific issue, not just a blanket issue. I’ve also learned that these women LOVE being able to lay on their tummies during their treatment, (many chiropractic tables will drop down to fit the belly or we have pillows that allow them to lay on their stomach comfortably) so I give them some extra time on their tummies to soak it all in 🙂

What type of community activities are you involved in?

I just moved back to my home in the Twin Cities, and I am excited to get involved in the community here again. In the past, I have volunteered at races, providing post race muscle work or kinesiotaping, coaching the area highschool track team (I love running!), volunteered for Girls on the Run, and was a member of the local Chamber of Commerce. Being part of the community is one of the favorite things about what I do!

What is one of your favorite memories involving working with someone who has a health challenge or disability?

One of my favorite things about seeing pregnant patients is when they come into the office waddling or barely able to walk and they get off the table and say “I can walk again!”

What would you like to see change/develop/emerge in the future of healthcare and the fitness industry?

I think that there is a strong disconnect between MDs and DCs, and for no reason at all! My husband is a MD and his coworkers are 100% supportive of my work and vice versa. Chiropractic is a safe and cost-effective, and should be used much ore often than it is. Our country is in quite a state with the level of people on pain meds–they say 1 in 4 people has low back pain. How different could that stat be if everyone saw a chiropractor? I think chiropractic needs to be more widely accepted and easily accessible for patients!

And what are you doing to make this happen?

Within my current specialty, I hope to start reaching out to OB-GYNs and midwives at area hospitals and breaking down the barriers between MDs and DCs, hoping to help these mamas have easier, more comfortable pregnancies and births.

What is your favorite fitness/inspirational/motivational quote?

“I have chosen to be happy because it is good for my health” -Voltaire

Anything else we should know about you?

I love what I do and am so grateful to have two amazing jobs here in Minneapolis providing chiropractic care to multiple populations!
